The Spirit Beareth Witness

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

When I received Christ the Holy Spirit made me know that I was helpless to change myself into a person who could please God. He gave me an eagerness for Him to change me in whatever ways He wanted. I knew that I needed that. I knew that He would change my life and I wanted that. The Holy Spirit bore witness with my Spirit that day and has born witness with my Spirit whenever He knows that I need it since that first time.

I received Christ at work while listening to Christian radio. Where I worked there were 58 women and 3 of us men. As I received Christ tears rolled down my cheeks. I didn’t care if those women saw the tears or not. Before that I would not have dreamed of ever letting any of them see my tears. It was as if God and I were the only relevant people that existed and we were agreeing that He wanted me and I needed Him. That was the first way the Spirit bore witness with mine that He had changed something in me. Moments later I spoke with my supervisor. I don’t recall the rest of the conversation but I told him I knew I was going to Heaven. In that moment the Spirit bore witness with my Spirit that I was going to Heaven and I was pretty sure that supervisor understood and was too.

Since then, as I hear or read words that speak about salvation the Spirit bears witness with mine again. When I hear the word saved I know that is what God did for me. When I hear about Him washing away sin, I know that is what He did for me. When I hear the words born again I know that is what happened to me. When I hear the phrase new creature I know that is what He made me. When I hear the phrase newness of life I know that is what He gave me. When I hear that we have passed from death unto life I knew that was what happened to me. When I hear the phrase alive unto God I know that is what I am.
